The Accountablility Factor

Posted on

I always shake my head when I hear people complain about how unhappy they are with their current circumstances and although I do often do this myself, I know better…. I know that everyone one of us has the ability to simply change and find the happiness within that circumstance. I know that looking at the positive will not only change your outlook, it will change your opportunities.

It’s a hard pill to swallow for some people to realize they hold the key to their own happiness – personally I find it empowering, the greatest adventure, my reason for living. I have never understood ‘choosing miserable’, ‘choosing hard’ or ‘choosing struggle’ – who wants to spend their life-like that?

At the end of the day, you are only accountable to yourself – you and you alone- and regardless of your circumstance, situation or past choices, start today. Today instead of struggle, choose peace, choose happiness, choose joy because there is no one telling you otherwise.

Serving up 25 Days of Christmas JOY

Posted on

There is no denying that I LOVE CHRISTMAS and today it officially starts for me. I don’t like to get too ahead of myself and start to early otherwise I generally look forward to taking it all down. The 24 days leading up to December 25 have the potential to be the most splendid 24 days in a row of the entire year, however for many, its a time of stress, obligations and overall grumpiness (not sure if thats an official word but oh well).

So for the next 24 days, I am going to be serving up little tips and tidbits to stay in the spirit of giving, happiness and joy. Hope you enjoy!

On the 1st day of Christmas…..

Please send Christmas cards. I read an article in the most recent issue of Real Simple (a magazine I really really love) that had me so irate that I actually almost wrote into them. This columnist was saying she thinks that sending actual cards should be obsolete- that we should just email each other (pfff the audacity, I know).

Now perhaps for you this is a bone of contention, perhaps you despise sending out cards to your Great Aunt Martha or to all your co-workers and perhaps you could spend all that time waiting in lines for the perfect gift for your kids BUT there is nothing better than receiving a card in the mail- even if it is a picture of your family in ugly matching sweaters. I actually am like a giddy child during December- I absolutley love opening up the mail.

A Christmas card to me, is like a perfect little present- a glimpse into a loved ones life that you perhaps don’t get to see as often as you would like, its like getting a warm hug from them in the mail.

I have to admit, me and one of my best friends have now turned this into a hobby. Every year in October (yep we are crazy), we start the process of making (yes by hand) our Christmas cards. Now this year I had 52 cards to make- that equals a whole lot of Christmas carols and about 5 run throughs of National Lampoons Christmas Vacation- you don’t need to get all crazy here people (like me) but just select a few loved ones that you truly wish to greet for the holiday season.

And remember all the hugs you are passing through the mail to those on the receiving end.

Beauty in Words…entry #2

Posted on

I recently saw a documentary on CTV entitled “4 Paths to Peace”. It followed 4 people from very different walks of life as they attended the Vancouver Peace Summit 2009- which the Dalai Lama spoke at. I was instantly interested in the program- this is sooo up my alley. I actually had wanted to attend this conference but life seemed to get in the way and I now wish I had made it more of a priority to go.

I am sure everyone will agree with me when I say I think the Dalai Lama is an amazing individual- right alongside Mother Theresa. I was deeply moved by this small piece of one of many of his teachings…

“ONE GREAT QUESTION underlies our experience, whether we think about it consciously or not: What is the purpose of life?  I have considered this question and would like to share my thoughts in the hope that they may be of direct, practical benefit to those who read them.

I believe that the purpose of life is to be happy.  From the moment of birth, every human being wants happiness and does not want suffering.  Neither social conditioning nor education nor ideology affect this.  From the very core of our being, we simply desire contentment.  I don’t know whether the universe, with its countless galaxies, stars and planets, has a deeper meaning or not, but at the very least, it is clear that we humans who live on this earth face the task of making a happy life for ourselves.  Therefore, it is important to discover what will bring about the greatest degree of happiness.”
Tenzin Gyatso; The Fourteenth Dalai Lama

We all seem to be searching for the purpose in our own life and for most that generally translates into what job we will have and the size of our paycheck and although that can be one piece of the happiness puzzle, we all know its not the whole piece.

Being happy, truly deep down happy involves a huge degree of self awareness and self acceptance far beyond what I currently posses but hearing this and remembering it will certainly keep things in perspective for me.
